Suspect with a butcher knife arrested after five-hour standoff: WPS

The Windsor Police Service has arrested a 26-year-old man after a five-hour standoff on Thursday.

Just before 7:30 a.m., police were called to reports of a person with a weapon in the 300 block of McEwan Avenue. The man was reportedly armed with a butcher knife and had chased several people in the area.

No injuries were reported.

When officers arrived, they said the suspect contained himself within his home. Emergency services established a perimeter, then trying to come to a peaceful solution. Police spoke with the man on the phone and said he refused to come out of the home.

During the standoff, the man allegedly entered a roommate’s bedroom in the home, damaging the door. The roommate reported several stolen and damaged items.

Around 12:30 p.m., the WPS said the man tried to escape via the back door and was arrested.

The man is now charged with:

• Assault with a weapon
• Possession of a dangerous weapon
• Break-and-enter with intent to commit an indictable offense
• Two counts of mischief under $5,000
• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
