Alleged drunk driver in deadly Hwy. 11 crash back in jail accused of bail breach

A Bracebridge, Ont. man accused of impaired and dangerous driving causing death in an October 2025 crash south of Orillia is back behind bars.

Donald Austin, 37, is accused of failing to comply with a release order not to consume alcohol and is charged with resisting arrest while police investigated a family dispute over the weekend in Bracebridge, according to court documents obtained by CTV News.

Austin had been granted bail following a review in the Superior Court of Justice on a $40,000 pledge by sureties under strict conditions including a GPS ankle monitor.

Austin had behind bars since October 2025 when police said Austin, while behind the wheel of a pickup truck, was involved in a deadly crash along Highway 11 near Line 15 of Oro-Medonte that killed motorcyclist Harnoor Singh.

Singh, 27, was discovered lying on the highway following several calls for help to 911 when police said witnesses reported the motorcycle and pickup truck were involved in a “road rage-type altercation” in the moments leading up to the crash at about 10:30 on the night of October 6.

Police said Austin was behind the wheel, remained at the scene and showed obvious signs of impairment. He was also charged with obstructing a police officer, failure or refusal to comply with a breathalyzer demand, driving without insurance, while under suspension and without a permit.

Loved ones have described Harnoor Singh as a kind, ambitious, and intelligent young man who moved to Canada from India in 2021 before graduating with a Master’s degree from the University of Western Ontario. They said the software engineer who dreamed of becoming a Canadian citizen and starting a family here.

According to court documents obtained by CTV News, Austin was arrested and charged with impaired driving three years ago in Bracebridge.

Police said his vehicle flipped into a ditch off Taylor Road. He was fined $2,000 and banned from driving for a year.

Austin is scheduled to return to a Bracebridge virtual courtroom next week. The allegations against him have not been tested in court.
