School lockdowns lifted after gun investigation in Blenheim

School lockdowns in Blenheim have been lifted after a police investigation into a report of a person with a gun.

Blenheim District High School, along with Harwich Raleigh Public School and W.J. Baird Public School, were placed into lockdown Tuesday morning as a precautionary measure.

Chatham-Kent police officers were called to the area of Chatham Street South in Blenheim regarding a male subject in possession of a long gun. Police say they took initial steps to ensure public safety.

Upon receiving the report, school administrators acted immediately and followed the direction of police. Officers were present at the schools and positioned throughout the community while the situation was investigated.

Officers have since located the male and the gun. Police say they determined that the firearm involved was a BB gun.

After addressing the concern and confirming there was no ongoing risk to students or staff, police said that the lockdowns could be safely lifted. All schools resumed normal operations.

Police say no further action is required at this time.
