Whitecaps say no viable offer has emerged to keep club in Vancouver

The Vancouver Whitecaps are having a dominant season on the pitch—but concerns are growing about the team’s future in the city.

Chants of “Save the Caps” rang out across BC Place after a big Vancouver Whitecaps win Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd. However, a stellar start to the season has been marred by uncertainty facing the team’s long-term future in Vancouver.

An article published Monday by The Athletic says Major League Soccer owners discussed the possible relocation of the Vancouver Whitecaps at a meeting earlier this month. The report cites unnamed sources with knowledge of the discussions.

Senior writer Paul Tenorio says Las Vegas was the main market talked about.

“As part of that meeting, what was discussed was the potential relocation of the Whitecaps and chief among the cities in contention is Las Vegas,” Tenorio told CTV News. “So the future of the Whitecaps, at least in Vancouver, certainly seems to be in peril.”

Tenorio also reports Phoenix was discussed as another possible option.

“There are kind of these sharks that are circling waiting for this opportunity,” said Tenorio.

The Whitecaps responded with a statement saying it’s aware of the report, and that since putting the club up for sale in late 2024, they’ve held serious talks with more than 100 potential interested parties, but no viable offer has emerged that would keep the team in Vancouver.

The club says challenges tied to stadium economics and venue access have made attracting buyers difficult.

“It remains the strong preference of this ownership group to find a solution in Vancouver. If there is a local ownership group with the vision and resources to chart a path forward, we urge them to come forward,” the statement said.

Ahead of this season, the Whitecaps reached a one‑year lease agreement at the government‑run BC Place. The deal included an extra $1.5 million in game‑day profit from the province.

At the time, club president and CEO Axel Schuster said more steps were still needed to stabilize the club.

“I think it needs 25 to 30 more of those little steps or it needs a few big steps to really get in safe water,” Schuster said in February.

As ownership questions linger, fans are continuing to make their voices heard through rallies and the online #SaveTheCaps campaign. By Monday evening, more than 5,000 people had added their names to the “Sign the Wall” section of the savethecaps.com website.

The team says it’s taken notice.

“It of course becomes emotional because it’s love. It’s love to the team and to the players,” said Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sørensen following Saturday’s win.
