Suspect sought after ‘senseless act of violence’ on senior at B.C. bus stop

Police in Kamloops, B.C., are appealing to the public for information that could help identify a suspect after an alleged unprovoked attack on a senior.

The RCMP says the assault was reported on June 5 at the downtown bus exchange in the 400 block of Lansdowne Street.

Investigators say the victim, described as a man in his 70s, was seated waiting for a bus at around 7 a.m. when the suspect allegedly struck him in the face without provocation.

The victim suffered serious injuries and the suspect fled the scene, police said in a news release Friday.

Authorities have released a surveillance image of the alleged suspect in an effort to further their investigation, two weeks after the attack.

“We are very fortunate the victim was not more seriously injured, in what by all accounts, appears to have been a senseless act of violence,” Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in a statement.

“Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have video, information about the identity of the suspect male, or was a witness to the event,” she added.

The suspect is described as an Indigenous man between 20 and 30 years old with long, dark hair.

He was wearing a backwards black hat, white T-shirt, black jeans, backpack and work boots at the time of the assault, police said.

“We are asking anyone who may have CCTV or dashcam footage in the area, before and after the assault, to call police,” Shoihet said.
