Flood watches issued in parts of eastern Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources says a flood watch is in effect for areas along the Ottawa River between Pembroke and Arnprior.

The ministry said in a bulletin on Friday that recent warm weather melting the snowpack and lake ice, combined with precipitation in the forecast will result in high water conditions in some parts of the region.

The watch is in effect for areas downstream of Pembroke until April 17, unless updated or replaced.

“Residents that have been affected by high water and flow conditions in the past, should take necessary action to protect/secure any vulnerable property in proximity to rivers and lakes and closely monitor developing conditions and regularly check for updated messages,” the ministry said.

“Water levels and flows upstream of Pembroke are expected to rise but remain below flood threshold levels at this time.”

A flood outlook is in effect for inland areas of Renfrew County, with potential for flooding in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage. Widespread flooding is not expected.

“Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to closely follow changing conditions and to take necessary measures and exercise caution around rivers and streams. Please alert and monitor any children under your care to possible dangers and supervise their activities,” the ministry said.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the Tay Valley and Rideau Lakes regions.

“Reservoirs in this area have reduced capacity, which has increased the risk of localized flooding in low-lying regions,” the RVCA said. “Residents are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor local conditions, and take necessary steps to protect their properties.”

A water safety statement is in effect for the Lower Ottawa River, from Arnprior to Hawkesbury, cautioning residents of high flows, unsafe banks, melting ice, and other factors that could be dangerous.

A chance of rain is in the forecast for the next several days. The Ministry of Natural Resources says parts of Ontario could see 15 to 50 millimetres of rain over the next five days.
