Man sentenced to minimum 15 years, deportation in wife’s murder

A man who pleaded guilty to brutally murdering his wife must spend a minimum 15 years in prison, a Calgary judge ruled Friday.

Court of King’s Bench Justice Melanie Gaston sentenced Maninderpreet Singh to life imprisonment for second-degree murder after a joint recommendation from the Crown and defence lawyers.

Singh will be eligible for parole after spending at least 15 years in a federal penitentiary.

Crown prosecutor Janice Walsh told CTV News that Singh will be subject to deportation to his home country of India after his release, given that the work visa he used to enter Canada has expired.

An agreed statement of facts says Singh, now 24, strangled 25-year-old Manpreet Kaur in a brutal assault that left blood all over their home in the northeast Calgary community of Redstone on April 21, 2024.
