Confederation Bridge between N.B., P.E.I. reopens following heavy rain and high winds

Heavy rain and high winds have knocked out power to many Maritimers and is disrupting travel in the region.

Weather alerts

Yellow wind warnings remain in effect for eastern mainland Nova Scotia and most of Cape Breton.

“Strong westerly winds are expected to develop later this morning on the back side of an intense low pressure system moving towards Newfoundland. The strongest wind gusts are expected along parts of the coast,” the warning reads.

Weather warnings in place for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island have ended.

Power

As of 6:30 a.m., there were 55 active outages in Nova Scotia affecting 2,423 customers.

At that time in New Brunswick, there were 17 NB Power customers without electricity and 1,767 customers off the grid on P.E.I.

Travel

The Confederation Bridge was closed to all traffic for almost three hours.

A post on the bridge’s website said the closure went into effect just after 4 a.m. Monday. It reopened just before 7 a.m.

However, certain classes of vehicles are restricted from crossing until the current high wind situation changes.

The Macdonald Bridge between Halifax and Dartmouth, N.S., was shut down Sunday afternoon after scaffolding fell onto the road. It has since reopened.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled the following sailings for Monday:

• The 6:30 a.m. crossing from Port aux Basques, N.L., to North Sydney, N.S.
• The 11:45 a.m. crossing from Port aux Basques to North Sydney
• The 11:45 a.m. crossing from North Sydney to Port aux Basques

Northumberland Ferries says the following departures have been cancelled due to high winds in the Northumberland Strait:

• The 7 a.m. departure from Wood Islands, P.E.I.
• The 8:30 a.m. departure from Caribou, N.S.

The MV Fundy Rose is currently out of service for scheduled maintenance.

Sailings resume from Digby, N.S., at 4 p.m. Tuesday and from Saint John, N.B., at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
