Thousands gather for World Cup watch party in Winnipeg as Canada takes on Qatar

Crowds packed Assiniboine Park on Thursday evening as soccer fans turned out in force for a community watch party celebrating Canada’s FIFA World Cup match against Qatar.

Lindsay Hughes, Manager of Communications at Assiniboine Park Conservancy, said the event reflected the unifying power of the sport.

“We’re so excited to see so many people here,” Hughes told CTV News on the park grounds as the game was unfolding.

“This is really the kind of sport that brings together people from all different backgrounds, all communities, all cultures. It’s an international sport, so just a really good opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate and enjoy a great day outdoors,” Hughes said.

As for exact turnout, Hughes said staff were working to get a final tally, noting that attendance is in the thousands.

“It’s really heartwarming to see the community come out,” she said.

Canada defeated Quatar 6-0, earning its first-ever win at the men’s FIFA World Cup.

The match marked Canada’s second game at this year’s tournament.
