Windsor Goodwill giving away coats to those in need

The Good Will is giving out free coats this weekend for anyone in need.

As temperatures begin to drop, a local program is stepping up to keep Windsor residents warm this winter.

Goodwill’s annual winter coat giveaway is back, offering free winter wear to those in need. Goodwill staff said they will be distributing free winter coats, hats, and mitts. It’s all part of the Clothing Works program.

Friday was the first day, but the doors will open Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the McDougall Street Goodwill community store.

Carol McIntyre is the Clothing Works coordinator with Goodwill in southern Ontario. McIntyre welcomes the generous donations from the community, especially given the increasing demand.

“Last year in Windsor alone, we gave away 4,000 plus coats and accessories in the two days that we were here overall,” said McIntyre.

“We do this, giveaway in London, Ontario, and St. Thomas as well. As a whole, we gave away 10,000 plus items last year.”

Organizers are encouraging anyone in need to stop by. Donations of gently used coats and winter gear are also still welcome at local Goodwill locations.
