How to protect your vehicle from thefts this summer

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers is reminding the community to protect your vehicles from thefts this summer.

“Auto theft is a very real problem for people, especially those who may be travelling,” said Erica McIntosh, coordinator with Crime Stoppers.

“We want to help remind people to keep their vehicle protected in order to reduce incentives criminals have to steal from you. For example, if you have a newer vehicle with a keyless entry and start, put your keys in a shielded signal blocker bag to help reduce the risk of criminals remotely gaining access.”

Crime Stoppers says thieves look for unlocked vehicles in driveways, shopping centres, parks, and other recreational areas. They look inside for anything valuable left behind.

CK Crime Stoppers offers the following tips to keep your vehicle safe:

• Always lock your vehicle and roll up your windows all the way
• Never leave your vehicle running and unattended, even for a few minutes
• Remove valuables from plain sight, including wallets, purses, laptops, cell phones, sunglasses, tools, backpacks, and loose change
• When out shopping, avoid leaving what you bought in your vehicle
• Park in busy, well-lit areas and be aware of surroundings
• If going on vacation, park in a locked garage if possible or a well-lit driveway, choose a reputable long-term parking lot with security measures
• Store keys in a signal-blocking bag or metal container when not using to reduce risk of criminals gaining access to your car remotely
• When parking in public places, manually lock your vehicle with the button inside on the door, rather than just relying on the fob

“Locally, car theft is not as serious as it can be in larger urban areas, but we have heard reports of thieves targeting unlocked vehicles, looking for valuables,” McIntosh added.

“Make sure you lock your vehicles at night, park in well-lit areas, and keep items out of sight. This includes even the change you may have for your coffee or parking.”

She said crime prevention is about reducing opportunity and taking extra time to secure your vehicle and make it look less attractive.
