Driver on B.C. highway busted for excessive speeding, open liquor container

A driver headed on a long-weekend camping trip had his vehicle impounded after he was pulled over for excessive speeding and caught with an open liquor container, according to the B.C. Highway Patrol.

Officers doing speed enforcement on the Sea to Sky Highway clocked a Jeep filled with camping gear going 148 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on May 16, Mounties said in a statement Thursday. When the vehicle was pulled over, the 27-year-old driver—who had a learners licence—failed a roadside screening for alcohol impairment.

“Speed and alcohol are two of the top three causes of death on B.C. roads,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol said in the statement.

“Never start the party on the road. Instead, leave early enough so that you enjoy the journey and don’t lose your vehicle or your life.”

The man was issued a 90-day prohibition, and the vehicle was taken off the road. He was fined $368 for excessive speeding, $109 for driving without a supervisor, and $230 for having an open liquor container.
