Family of slain Sask. woman holds March for Justice on first day of murder trial

More than two years after Danielle Dobersheck’s death, her family calls for justice on the steps of a Melfort courthouse as her former partner stands trial.

Danielle Dobersheck’s family continues to seek justice more than two years after her death.

Dobersheck’s former partner Cody Chubey was indicted for first-degree murder for her death in Melfort on March 10, 2024. His trial began Monday.

Dobersheck’s aunt Dinah Marion spoke outside of the courthouse before the trial.

“We just hope to see justice here today,” she said.

“Throughout this week, the trial...and we haven’t faced Cody. It’s going to be hard when we see him. He played out to be a really nice guy.”

Dobersheck’s family met in front of Court of King’s Bench in Melfort on day one of the trial. The family proceeded to lead a March for Justice through the downtown, honouring the memory of Dobersheck, a mother who left behind three young children.

“Her children are young, and they shouldn’t be enduring this kind of pain,” said Marion.

“They not only lose their mum, they’re losing their father in this trial.”

It’s been a difficult two years for the family. Marion says they not only lost Dobersheck, but her two younger siblings as well.

“Her sister passed away in a house fire and her brother passed away due to medical [causes], and it was all within a year.”

Prior to her death Dobersheck worked at North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS,) helping those impacted by domestic and interpersonal violence.

Executive Director Joan Bear says Dobersheck was great working with kids.

“Our focus is to help women who are dealing with domestic violence, and she kept her life pretty private,” said Bear.

“It’s unfortunate we weren’t able to offer her extra assistance, but we know it can happen to anybody, anywhere, and it just strengthens our resolve to go out there and try and help as many people as possible with our women’s shelter and outreach programs.”

Dobersheck’s family adds she was an outgoing person who had love and care for everyone.
