Water main break closes Westboro intersection, Hwy. 417 off-ramp

Driver are being redirected after a water main break forced the closure of a busy intersection and highway exit in Westboro.

The Ottawa Police Service posted to X shortly before 3:45 p.m. Saturday advising of an infrastructure failure at the intersection of Carling and Kirkwood avenues.

CTV News cameras at the scene show the road cracking with pooling water in the middle of the intersection.

The Ministry of Transportation has also closed the westbound Highway 417 off-ramp at Carling Avenue.

“There is a small diameter water main break at the intersection of Carling and Kirkwood avenues. City staff are on site investigating and mobilizing to make repairs,” said an emailed statement by Tammy Rose, the City of Ottawa’s general manager of the Infrastructure and Water Services Department.

“It typically takes eight hours to make the repairs once the water main is isolated.”

Traffic in the area is being directed. An Ottawa police spokesperson told CTV News that no injuries were reported.

Police say the duration of the closure is unknown. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.
