Mackenzie King Bridge reopens after police operation

The Mackenzie King Bridge in downtown Ottawa has reopened after a police operation at the Rideau Centre Sunday afternoon.

The Ottawa Police Service said in a post on X at approximately 2:20 p.m. that it was closing the bridge to ensure public safety.

“There is no threat to public safety and all efforts are being made to safely de-escalate the situation. Please expect a significant police presence in the area at this time and avoid the area if possible,” police said.

Police announced the bridge had reopened shortly after 3 p.m.

“From approx 1pm - 3pm this afternoon, there was a police operation at the Rideau Centre to support a member of our community who was in crisis. Efforts at de-escalation were successful and the situation has resolved peacefully,” police said in an update on social media.

Police presence in the area will be returning to normal.
