Sault man charged with assaulting his dog

A 69-year-old man from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., has been charged after witnesses saw someone attacking a dog on Second Line West on Sunday.

Police responded around 1:30 p.m. on June 21 after receiving a 911 call about a dog being struck outside a business.

“Officers were dispatched to the scene,” Sault police said in a news release Monday.

Members of the public intervened

“An investigation revealed the accused had physically assaulted their dog until members of the community intervened. The dog ran away from the scene. The accused was arrested.”

Police said the dog has not been found after running away.

The man is charged with injuring or endangering an animal, failing to properly control a dog on a leash and failing to treat an animal in a humane manner.

He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 14.
