Police have identified the person who was killed May 22 in Kirkland Lake in a case that ended with murder charges.

The incident took place around 5:45 pm., when Ontario Provincial Police responded to a local hospital to help paramedics with someone who had sustained serious injuries.

“Despite life-saving efforts, the individual succumbed to their injuries,” the OPP said in a news release May 27.

Kirkland Lake man charged with murder

“A post-mortem has identified the deceased as Michael Maurer, 49 years old, of Kirkland Lake.”

A 44-year-old man from Kirkland Lake has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to Maurer’s death.

The investigation is being conducted by the Kirkland Lake OPP crime unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Assistance is also being provided by the OPP canine unit, OPP North East Region emergency response team and OPP forensic identification services.
