Projet Montréal, Ensemble Montréal to challenge results of four municipal races

Both Projet Montréal and Ensemble Montréal confirmed on Monday that they each plan to contest the results of four municipal electoral races.

For its part, Projet Montréal states that this comes “following an election campaign marked by low voter turnout, public sector strikes that limited voters’ ability to obtain information and get to the polls, and several media reports of irregularities in the electoral process.”

The party says it plans to challenge the following losses:

• Lachine mayor: Maja Vodanovic lost by 26 votes.
• Lachine city councillor: Myriam Grondin lost by eight votes.
• Saint-Jacques city councillor (in the Ville-Marie borough): Robert Beaudry lost by 13 votes.
• Jacques-Brizard borough councillor (in Île-Bizard–Sainte-Geneviève): Guillaume Côté lost by 11 votes.

“In all of these elections, Projet Montréal was informed of several concerns that could affect public confidence in the results,” the party notes.

It adds that it plans to officially request the judicial recounts on Nov. 12 before the Quebec courts.

Ensemble Montréal also confirmed that it wants to contest the results of four elections:

• Verdun mayor: Geneviève Desautels lost by 45 votes.
• Parc-Extension city councillor: Mary Deros lost by six votes.
• Côte-des-Neiges city councillor: Yvonne Nguyen lost by six votes.
• Saint-Léonard-Ouest city councillor: Gabriel Retta lost by 300 votes.

In a written statement, a spokesperson for Montreal’s mayor-elect, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, explains that it is “absolutely necessary for Ensemble Montréal that the voices of citizens be heard.”

She points out that there were numerous rejected ballots and the races were tight, prompting the request for recount.
