Freezing rain alert in effect for the Montreal area on Wednesday and Thursday

After some warm weekend weather, Montrealers could get hit by some less-than-pleasant precipitation mid-week.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for up to 30 millimetres of freezing rain from Wednesday to Thursday.

The alert is for the following regions in addition to Montreal and Laval:

• Montérégie
• Outaouais
• Laurentians
• Lanaudière
• Mauricie
• Centre-du-Québec
• Quebec City

“The event could last up to 24 hours and paralyze some services,” the alert said. “The weather will remain cold for the following days, which can complicate and delay the full restoration of services.”

The weather agency is reminding citizens that delays and cancellations may occur and that surfaces will become icy and slick.

“Prolonged power outages are likely,” Environment Canada said. “Ice build-up increases the risk of breaking tree branches.”

Residents are urged to consider delaying or cancelling non-essential travel on those days.
