City gives Edmonton park, house historic designations

The City of Edmonton gave Windsor Park's North Park a historical designation on May 19, 2026.

Two sites – a park and a house – have received historical designations from the City of Edmonton.

The city announced Tuesday it has declared the Windsor Park neighbourhood’s North Park and Bellevue’s Elizabeth Bell residence as municipal historic resources.

North Park is the city’s 200th historic designation and will receive $75,000 as a matching grant for park refurbishment.

The 1.57-hectare park sits in the middle of Windsor Park, the city’s first comprehensively planned neighbourhood, which is located west of the University of Alberta’s main campus.

North Park sits amid Windsor Park’s curved streets lined with elm trees, and features 27 types of trees and ornamental shrubs.

It retains several of its original features, including a sunken garden and lawn, a low masonry retaining wall with steps, original iron drain and grate infrastructure, original granular walking paths and some original fencing.

The one-and-a-half-storey Elizabeth Bell Residence, at 11219 70 St. NW, east of Wayne Gretzky Drive, was built in the 1910s by Bell.

It features a high gable roof with a small shed dormer on the north side of it. Its main floor is clad with wooden clapboard, the upper storey with wooden shakes.

The residence is the city’s 201st designation as a municipal historical resource declared by the city and receives a $59,000 grant for help with its refurbishment.
