B.C. man charged in connection with $729K scam of Alberta resident: RCMP

A British Columbia man faces charges in connection with an investment scam involving an Alberta resident.

In February of 2025, Three Hills RCMP said it launched an investigation into an investment scam that it says resulted in a victim being defrauded of $729,000.

The victim had searched for high interest savings opportunities online leading to contact with a company representative who claimed to be with J.P. Morgan.

The police say the victim was offered a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), leading to them sending wire transfers of $500,000 and $230,000 to a beneficiary company called Sunlife Holdings Inc.

Further investigation by Three Hills RCMP led to the discovery that JP Morgan doesn’t operate as a GIC holder in Canada and that the “J.P. Morgan GIC” was a common scam.

Police were able to investigate the bank account connected to Sunlife Holdings Inc. and recovered the name of the account holder, where they discovered numerous wire transfers sent to bank accounts in Canada and the United Kingdom.

Harprit Singh Gill, 47, of Richmond, British Columbia, was charged with fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime.

A nationwide warrant was issued and on May 6, Gill was arrested in Richmond.

Following a bail hearing, Gill was remanded into custody. He will be transported to Alberta for additional court proceedings.
