Banff trail reopens after search for missing tourist called off: Parks Canada

Banff RCMP and Parks Canada confirmed that a man drowned in the lower falls of Johnston Canyon Friday evening.

Parks Canada says it reopened a popular tourist site to the public on Monday after calling off a search for the body of a man who died in an accident over the weekend.

The federal agency first announced it had closed the Johnston Canyon Trail and Day Use Area on Friday evening after a 25-year-old man from Pennsylvania jumped off the cliffs and into the lower falls shortly before 7 p.m.

Parks Canada and RCMP began recovery efforts when the man did not resurface.

Those search efforts involved cameras instead of divers, as the currents were too strong to allow for a safe search.

On Monday, Parks Canada said RCMP had confirmed the suspected fatality and called all search and recovery efforts off.

The trail reopened on Monday at 11:35 a.m., the park said on social media.

“Due to ongoing hazardous water conditions, all available search efforts have been exhausted at this time, and recovery operations have been suspended,” Parks Canada wrote in an email to CTV News.

The Mounties continue to lead the investigation.
