An employee died on the job May 1 at Agnico Eagle’s Upper Beaver Project in northern Ontario, the company has announced.

“It is with immense sadness that Agnico Eagle announces that a fatal incident involving an employee occurred at the Upper Beaver Project,” the company said in a social media post.

“The team at Upper Beaver is currently cooperating with local authorities to determine the cause of the incident.”

Messages from CTV News to Ontario’s Ministry of Labour and the Ontario Provincial Police seeking more information weren’t immediately returned on Monday.

Agnico is working to develop the Upper Beaver deposit, located in the Township of Gauthier in northeastern Ontario, into a gold and copper mine.

“On behalf of the entire Agnico Eagle team, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of our colleague,” the company said.
