Young man found asleep in idling vehicle, facing impaired charges: Police

A man, 21, blew more than twice the legal limit after officers found him asleep at the wheel in a parking lot, according to police.

Barrie police got a report from a caller on Sunday morning at 7:15 that a vehicle had been idling in a Burger King parking lot on Bayfield Street for more than two hours.

When officers arrived, they found the men fast asleep at the wheel, slumped over in the driver’s seat. Police say his foot was near the gas pedal, so when officers woke him up, they made sure the engine was shut off.

Authorities say they noticed the man looked to be disoriented, had glassy eyes and was slurring his speech, along with a strong smell of alcohol.

The man allegedly failed the roadside breathalyzer test police gave him and was subsequently arrested for two counts of impaired driving.

Police say the man had a hard time keeping his balance as officers walked him to the police cruiser where they took him to the station for more testing.

The man also had his licence suspended.

Barrie police are reminding drivers they can face impaired driving charges in a parked or idling vehicle.
