Woman charged with stunt driving after clocked at 93 km/h in 50 zone on Yonge Street: police

A Barrie driver is facing stunt driving charges after police say they clocked her nearly doubling the speed limit on a busy city road last Friday.

The 55-year-old woman was stopped by Barrie police after allegedly travelling 93 kilometres an hour in a posted 50 km/h zone on Yonge Street near Cox Mill Road.

Police say the speed qualified as stunt driving under Ontario law. Officers suspended her driver’s licence for 30 days and impounded the vehicle for 14 days. The driver was also issued a court date.

Stunt driving and street racing are dangerous and illegal.

According to the Ontario government, if you are involved in stunt driving or street racing, you can face an immediate 30-day driver’s licence suspension, an immediate 14-day vehicle impoundment, a minimum fine of $2,000, a maximum fine of $10,000 and six demerit points.

Drivers could also face a post-conviction licence suspension that lasts a minimum of one year and up to three years for their first conviction, in addition to other potential penalties for later convictions.
