Spring thaw, rainfall cause flooding, road closures across northeastern Ontario

Ontario Provincial Police advise that warmer temperatures, recent rainfall and ongoing snowmelt are causing localized flooding and hazardous travel conditions across several communities in northeastern Ontario.

OPP said the affected areas include Sudbury, West Nipissing and zones north of Sault Ste. Marie, particularly near the Goulais River and Batchawana Bay.

“These conditions have resulted in localized flooding, road washouts and elevated water levels,” police said in a social media statement on Sunday.

“OPP officers are assisting with road closures, stranded motorists and ongoing emergency response efforts, including well being checks on affected residents,” said police.

Officials with OPP North East Region said provincial police have deployed resources to support response efforts where required and continues to monitor conditions closely across the region, adjusting its response as needed.

Public urged to avoid non-essential travel

Police warned that road and weather conditions may change rapidly, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The OPP reminded the public to prioritize safety and provided the following guidance:

• avoid nonessential travel in affected areas,
• check current road conditions, closures and advisories through 511on.ca and municipal511.ca,
• monitor localized weather forecasts, and follow OPP social media channels for timely updates on active road closures,
• never drive through flooded or closed roadways and
• obey all posted signage and directions from emergency crews.

Provincial police said that municipalities remain responsible for localized flood response and are best positioned to provide updates on road conditions and community specific impacts.

Residents are encouraged to follow local municipal updates for the most current information.
