Iconic Collingwood building to be repurposed

A historic building in Collingwood needs a new purpose and the Town needs your help.

Located at 44 Hurontario Street in downtown Collingwood, the two-and-a-half-storey federal building was built in the early 1900s. It has a low, hipped roof and was designed in a Beaux-Art style, an ornamental architectural style that typically uses symmetry, columns and lavish sculptural decorations. It’s made of white marble and stands out for its projecting portico or extended porch, and colonnade—a series of columns to form a covered area.

The structure is currently being used by Service Canada, but the Town of Collingwood could buy the building.

In what the Town calls an “open brainstorming exercise,” it’s looking for residents to share their ideas for the future of the building.

The Town says it is looking for ideas that will preserve the building’s historical character and significance.

The Town is giving examples of what could potentially fill the space including non-profit organizations, community gathering and local businesses.

The building has been considered as a dedicated arts centre, but major structural modifications would need to be completed, according to the Town. Also, with limited parking, an arts centre was vetoed by the Town. Ideas related to an arts centre could still be possibilities though like arts, culture and other types of creative programming.

“This is a rare and exciting opportunity to imagine the future of one of Collingwood’s most iconic buildings,” says Collingwood Mayor Yvonne Hamlin. “We know our community is full of creative ideas, and we want to hear what residents envision for this historic space and how it can continue to contribute to the energy and vibrancy of our downtown.”

The public’s ideas will be brought to Town Council and decisions will be made on the future of the building based on the guiding principles of accessibility, inclusivity, fiscal responsibility, long-term sustainability, heritage preservation, partnership opportunities and downtown revitalization.
