Heat and humidity continue to fuel severe thunderstorm risk in the Maritimes

Track ongoing thunderstorms in the Maritimes on radar and alerts issued by Environment Canada.

Powerful thunderstorms rolled across eastern areas of Nova Scotia Thursday morning.

The storms brought frequent lightning and heavy downpours with some rain totals of 30 to 60 mm reported within a span of two hours.

There are further risks of thunderstorms in the Maritimes Thursday: in New Brunswick during the afternoon and evening, and in Prince Edward Island and northern Nova Scotia during the evening and night.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for most of the province of New Brunswick by Environment Canada.

Hazards with developing thunderstorms could include:

• Potential rainfall rates: locally 25 to 50 mm per hour in thunderstorms.
• Potential wind gusts: 80 to 100 km/h in thunderstorms.
• Potential hail size: dime to nickel.

CTV News Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell suggests having a way to monitor the latest severe thunderstorm watches and warnings issued by Environment Canada, as the situation with thunderstorms, especially severe thunderstorms, can change quickly.

When thunder roars, head indoors and wait 30 minutes until after the last sound of thunder before returning outside.
