Construction to reopen Portage and Main continues to progress; however, a lot of the aesthetic work remains.

On Monday, the Winnipeg Public Service provided a verbal update on the pedestrian opening of Portage and Main, saying that though it may look like work is almost complete, a lot of small details still need to be fine-tuned.

It notes that the hoarding that was up at all four corners has mostly been taken down. All the hoarding is expected to be removed in the next few weeks.

In terms of traffic management in the area, the city is not seeing any extreme delays from construction. The public service adds that though some of the road closures may change over time, the area won’t be closed off completely during construction.

As for money, the overall project is still within the authorized budget. However, the single tender for MD Steele Construction is tracking a little over the approved expenditure.

When it comes to scheduling, things are progressing somewhat smoothly. Work is out about a week in the northwest corner; however, the contractor is adjusting the schedule.

Council voted in favour of reopening Portage and Main to pedestrians in March of 2024. The city expects the intersection will be open by July of this year.
