A 41-year-old man is facing several charges after police say he bit an officer during his arrest early Saturday morning.

Around 1:11 a.m., Winnipeg police pulled a taxi over near Dufferin Avenue and Salter Street for an unrelated matter. Before officers could approach the vehicle, they said the suspect, who was a passenger, ran out of the cab.

Officers said they chased the man and tried to arrest him. The man allegedly resisted arrest and bit one of the officers. Police said they then used a taser to bring the situation under control.

Police said the suspect was treated at the scene, while the officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries and released.

Officers said they found around 14 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,380, as well as $200 cash on the suspect. Police also said there were three outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The 41-year-old man is facing charges for assaulting and resisting a peace officer, as well as possessing proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He also faces two counts of possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

He remains in custody.
