Two teenagers are facing second-degree murder charges in connection to a fatal assault in the city’s downtown area over the weekend.
According to police, a 45-year-old man was assaulted on Sunday around 10:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Qu’Apelle Avenue.
Officers responded to the scene and found the victim with multiple upper body injuries. Police provided emergency medical care, including two chest seals, before the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he died from his injuries.
Police have identified the victim as Steven Gordon Loonfoot, 45, a member of Garden Hill First Nation who had been living in Winnipeg for several years.
The homicide unit took over the investigation and arrested two 16-year-old males.
Police consulted the Manitoba Prosecution Service and second-degree murder charges were authorized against both suspects.
The charges have not been proven in court.
