Workers at three Child and Family Services (CFS) agencies could soon be going on strike.

On Tuesday, the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union (MGEU) issued a two-week strike notice for Metis Child, Family and Community Services; Michif Child and Family Services; and Southeast Child and Family Services.

The union, which represents about 500 members at these agencies, announced that workers will be walking off the job if an agreement can’t be reached by March 25. It notes the main issue in negotiations is wage parity.

“It shouldn’t matter what community in Manitoba you come from. If you are connected with child and family services, you and your family deserve the same quality of care,” said MGEU president Kyle Ross in a news release.

“And if you are a worker providing care or supporting those who do, you deserve to be paid fairly for that work, regardless of which agency you work for.”

According to the MGEU, some of these workers have been without a contract since March of 2022.

Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine said the Manitoba government has increased operational funding for CFS agencies by $11.3 million and hopes an agreement can be reached soon.
