Some Manitoba school divisions are suspending field trips down south because of the current political climate.
The Seven Oaks School Division said it is halting any trips for students to the United States for the remainder of the school year and next year. Superintendent Tony Kreml noted a music trip has already been cancelled.
He said tariffs and the uncertainty around the Canadian dollar could make these types of visits unaffordable for some families.
“We want to ensure that the opportunities for our families are equitable and keeping that in mind,” said Kreml.
Kreml said cost isn’t the only factor.
“When there are executive orders to the point of only recognizing certain people and essentially cancelling others, that can certainly provide for an unsafe situation.”
The Pembina Trails School Division sent an email to parents letting them know field trips to the U.S. are on pause for their students too. Assistant Superintendent Troy Scott said they will reassess the decision before the start of next school year.
“This decision prioritizes student safety and reaffirms our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion,” said Scott.
Like the buy local campaign, Manitoba Education Minister Tracy Schmidt is telling schools to explore their home turf instead.
“There are so many incredible educational opportunities right here in Manitoba, and we would encourage school divisions to follow suit,” said Schmidt.
