A 40-year-old Portage la Prairie man is hospitalized in critical condition after being assaulted on Friday night.

A Manitoba RCMP spokesperson told CTV News the incident took place outside a home in Somerset, a village about an hour and a half southwest of Winnipeg, around 10:45 p.m. Friday.

Mounties from the Pembina Valley detachment responded to reports of the assault and found the victim with life-threatening injuries.

He was taken to hospital by a STARS air ambulance and remains in critical condition on Sunday afternoon.

RCMP said a 33-year-old man was arrested at the scene, but no charges have been announced.
