A plan to rezone a parking lot at a curling rink to build affordable housing cleared a hurdle at city hall.

The mayor’s Executive Policy Committee has approved a subdivision and rezoning application for housing on the Granite Curling Club parking lot.

The unanimous vote comes a week after a marathon hearing at a lower committee, which was deadlocked on the issue.

Using federal money, the project includes 111 housing units, which would rise on the club’s western parking lot, which is city-owned land.

Board members and several curlers raised concerns that eliminating the parking threatens the viability of the Granite.

EPC added an amendment that the city work with the curling club on a parking solution before a development permit is issued.

The matter now moves to city council for a final vote.
