Manitoba combatting hate crimes with new lead prosecutor

The Manitoba government is assigning a lead Crown prosecutor who will work to combat hate crimes in the province.

Currently, the province has a working group within the Manitoba Prosecution Service which provides expertise on hate crime prosecutions. Now, the prosecution service will assign a lead attorney to coordinate the work of this group.

The province notes that new terms of reference for this working group are currently being drafted.

Manitoba also plans to provide specialized training to Crown attorneys to improve their expertise of hate crimes.

Between 2017 and 2022, Winnipeg saw 178 police-report hate-motivated crimes.
