A 46-year-old Winnipeg man is facing several charges after police say he randomly attacked a woman Friday morning.

Officers said they received a call about an assault in the 100 block of Rupert Avenue near the Manitoba Museum just before noon.

A 34-year-old woman told police she was walking in the area when she was physically assaulted by a man she didn’t know. She alleged he knocked her to the ground and continued assaulting her, before bystanders stepped in and brought her into a car to keep her safe.

According to police, the woman didn’t sustain any injuries and didn’t require medical attention.

Police said the suspect then walked into traffic at Logan Avenue and Princess Street, where he kicked the driver side door of a 2025 Porsche Macan, causing around $1,000 in damage.

Officers alleged the man tried attacking other pedestrians before bystanders intervened, apprehending him near Princess Street and Rupert Avenue. When police arrived, the man was arrested.

The 46-year-old was charged with assault, mischief under $5,000, and failing to comply with a probation order. He remains in custody and the charges haven’t been tested in court.
