Snowfall warning in effect as system threatens to dump 20 cm on parts of Manitoba

An approaching low pressure could bring upwards of 20 centimetres of snow to parts of Manitoba this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a snowfall warning Thursday afternoon for a large chunk of northern Manitoba including Churchill, Lynn Lake and Brochet.

An approaching low pressure system is expected to bring anywhere from 10 to 25 centimetres.

The weather agency expects snowfall to begin Friday morning and continue into Saturday, with the heaviest snow falling on Friday during the late morning and afternoon.

ECCC notes there may be a sharp cut off in where the heaviest accumulations happen. Exactly where that cut off will be is still unclear, meteorologists say.

“Particularly for Churchill, the heaviest snow may fall north of the actual townsite,” the snowfall warning said.

Snow is expected to taper off Saturday.

ECCC warned travel will likely be challenging, so allow for extra time. Local utility outages are also possible.
