A series of house-rattling gunshots was heard by witnesses of a mid-day shooting in a Winnipeg neighbourhood Wednesday that injured one person and resulted in one arrest.
Ricki Anderson was in her living room with her children when she saw a group running down her street while shooting.
“They shot that door in and kicked it in,” Anderson said while pointing to a house. ”And they didn’t really shoot in there; they just started shooting randomly around the area,” Anderson said.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were called to the area of McKenzie Street and Manitoba Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday for reports of shots fired.
When officers got to the scene, they found one injured person, who was taken to the hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable condition.
Police took one suspect into custody.
In video footage shared with CTV News of the incident, at least five gunshots could be heard.
The footage showed two people, including one with a firearm, running from McKenzie Street onto Manitoba Avenue. Next, two loud shots were then heard, and another two roughly 20 seconds later.
That’s when the person with the firearm and two other people are seen helping each other quickly walk back to McKenzie Street.
Another shot rang out, and the person with the firearm appeared to drop their weapon. The person then quickly picked the gun back up and ran further down McKenzie Street.
“It was very rattling,” Anderson said. “I’ve seen this happen multiple times in the North End, so I’m pretty used to this stuff happening.”
Anderson said she is fearful of crime in the area being committed by youth.
“I can’t even walk down to the corner store without second-guessing if this teenager is going to jump me.”
The Winnipeg police’s major crimes unit is investigating and is aware of the video circulating online.
