The City of Winnipeg is moving ahead with its plan to redevelop a historic curling club’s parking lot into an affordable housing development.
On Thursday, city council voted 11-2 in favour of a subdivision and rezoning application for housing on the Granite Curling Club’s parking lot.
The development involves an 11-storey housing project in the west parking lot, which is owned by the city. The project would bring 111 units to the area, with 51 per cent being affordable housing. The curling club’s east parking lot would not be impacted, while the west side parking lot would be reduced to about one-third of its current size.
The curling club and some of its members have expressed concerned over this plan, saying the reduction in parking would make it difficult for many members to utilize the facility.
Winnipeg’s public service has been directed to work with the club and other stakeholders to find a solution and address concerns.
