Hold on to your hat! Wicked winds whipped up in southern Manitoba Friday behind a fast-moving Alberta clipper.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said heavy snow fell over central Manitoba overnight, adding it fell at a rate of three to five cm an hour in some areas.

Wind gusts are expected to ease up considerably on Friday afternoon in Winnipeg and the Red River Valley, but sustained winds will continue from the north.

Snow associated with the low will clear out of northwestern Ontario on Friday afternoon, where north winds are also strong and gusting.

Meanwhile, ECCC ended extreme cold warnings for northern Manitoba. Sill, arctic high pressure will slump south into central Manitoba by Friday evening.

All this to say, temperatures in the province, including Winnipeg, will be colder on Friday and Saturday.

Conditions on Friday night will be clear across Manitoba with lows dropping into the -20s, marking an end to meteorological winter – the months of December, January and February.

If you’re impatiently waiting for spring to arrive - you’re in luck. With a new month starting Saturday, that signals the start of meteorological spring – the months of March, April and May.

Saturday will be sunny, but cool for early March in Winnipeg. The good news is that south winds developing tomorrow will help to usher in warmer air and a return to above-normal, mild temperatures on Sunday and next week.
