Wednesday started off with some stubborn light snow over Winnipeg and the Red River Valley.

The low pressure system has now moved off into Minnesota, bringing the snow to an end on this side of the international border on Wednesday afternoon.

Cold air is returning to southern Manitoba in the wake of the system’s cold front. North winds will send temperatures falling.

Much of the south will see temperatures fall between -18 C and -21 C, including Winnipeg and Brandon on Wednesday afternoon.

With the exception of flurries and light snow in Gillam and Churchill, most northern regions will see sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud.

While temperatures fall in the south, daytime highs in the north will be above normal for late January in many areas, reaching the mid to upper minus teens.

Ahead Wednesday night, the sky will be mostly clear in the south which will allow temperatures to plummet. Overnight lows will drop down to the upper minus twenties.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said temperatures will come close to extreme cold, but not quite frigid enough to issue a warning.

Sunshine will continue on Thursday before light snow and much milder temperatures on Friday.
