Extreme cold is on the way out, and now snow and blowing snow is on the way in on Tuesday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) ended all remaining extreme cold warnings just before noon on Tuesday.
An incoming low pressure system is now finally helping to budge a stubborn and bitterly cold air mass that has been locked over the province over the last several days.
That said, ECCC has replaced the warning with a blowing snow advisory on Tuesday for the Red River Valley up to the southern basin of Lake Winnipeg, excluding the City of Winnipeg.
Snow and blowing snow in strong and gusting south winds up to 60 km/h will arrive in the region early Tuesday afternoon.
The weather agency cautions that travel is expected to be hazardous where visibility is reduced, adding roadways oriented west to east will be particularly vulnerable in south winds.
Winnipeg is not under the weather agency’s advisory. However, similar conditions are expected. Be prepared for the possibility of reduced visibility in more open areas of the city.
ECCC said conditions will improve this evening as winds diminish.
Although the low is ushering in warmer air, the strong winds will produce wind chills with a cold bite in the mid-minus 30s early Tuesday afternoon, before some modest improvement later in the day.
The system is spreading a swath of snow elsewhere in the province, from Flin Flon and The Pas where winds are light, to the southwest where strong winds are also causing blowing snow.
The sun will be shining on the northeast on Tuesday.
ECCC said extreme cold will return to northern regions Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
