Louis Riel now recognized as first premier of Manitoba

On Feb. 19, 2024, Riel was officially recognized as Manitoba’s first premier with a ceremony at the legislature. His portrait was unveiled by Premier Wab Kinew, who campaigned on recognizing Riel’s role as premier, and David Chartrand, president of the Manitoba Metis Federation.

Louis Riel depicted as a Lego figure

Lego hobbyist Andrew Delbaere created Lego figurines of Riel and Amelia Douglas, which is believed to be the first depiction of a Metis figure in a Lego set.

Where is Louis Riel? Heritage Minute of Métis leader quietly removed

A Heritage Minute depicting the life and death of Riel was quietly removed by Historica Canada in 2020 following concerns by members of the Metis community. There are no plans to remake it.

The removal sparked controversy and discussion over history and how it’s portrayed.

Manitoba founding father Louis Riel honoured on 139th anniversary of execution

Last year, on the 139th anniversary of Riel’s execution, Manitoba leaders gathered to honour Riel’s legacy at his grave in St. Boniface.
