With about two weeks left, the U11 Lakeshore Lightning White minor hockey team has climbed into first place in the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.

The team overtook the U11 Huntsville Sting Black with a flurry of community work in recent weeks.

“The news got leaked last night at hockey practice, one of the little girls ran into the room and was like, ‘Oh my god, we’re in first place’,” Team manager Chantelle Meadows told CTV News.

The Lightning are white hot, volunteering at a local food bank, shovelling and making donations, among other tasks. Meadows said the team has compiled more than 600 good deeds.

The Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup challenges minor hockey teams and their communities to complete good deeds and document them on social media.

In the end, the winning team secures $100,000 for a local charity of their choice.

The Lightning have said their winnings would support the Cancer Research Collaboration Fund and Play for A Cure.

“It’s been really neat to see the kids come together,” Meadows said.

In a tight race, the Lightning are continuing to ask for the community’s support in winning the cup. Meadows said community members who document their good deeds can share them with the team on social media.

“We want to bring home the cup, so Windsor-Essex, we need your help,” she said.
