Local investments in firefighter safety

Almost $90,000 has been invested into firefighter safety in Kingsville and Amherstburg through Ontario’s Fire Protection Grant.

“Our firefighters put themselves in harm’s way to protect our families, our homes, and our communities,” MPP Anthony Leardi said.

“These investments help ensure local fire services have the equipment they need to stay safe and respond effectively.”

Leardi announced the grants this week. Amherstburg is getting $52,821.07.

“The Fire Protection and Prevention Grant from the Ontario government will continue to support our municipality and department’s efforts to reduce cancers and protect our firefighters while they protect Ontarians,” said Michael Mio, Amherstburg Fire Chief.

“The grant will be used to purchase firefighting gear and particulate blocking hoods, washer-extractors to launder contaminated bunker gear, maintain and improve showers to further reduce exposure to cancer causing agents. These improvements will also protect the families of our firefighters by preventing these contaminants from coming home.”

In Essex, $36.224.56 will go towards firefighter safety.

The money will be used to buy four AirMATION Industrial Air Cleaner units. They are designed to remove contaminants from fire halls and reduce occupational exposure risks.

“These units will significantly reduce firefighters’ exposure to harmful exhaust and support our ongoing efforts to protect their long-term health, including reducing cancer risk,” said Scott Moore, Kingsville Fire Chief.

“This investment helps ensure that the people who respond to emergencies in our community can work in a safer, healthier environment.”
