How a therapy dog is changing lives at Windsor’s Centre of Hope

The Salvation Army Centre of Hope in Windsor has recently welcomed a special visitor—Bentley, a gentle Great Dane therapy dog who has quickly become a cherished companion to residents, staff, and volunteers alike.

According to 64-year-old Freddie, who has been living at the Centre of Hope for the past five months, Bentley’s presence has been nothing short of transformative. A devoted dog lover, Freddie found solace in Bentley’s calm and affectionate nature.

“When I got up and walked away, Bentley followed me,” Freddie shared. “I started rubbing his back, and he melted into my hands. You could tell how relaxed he was, he went right down to the floor on all fours.”

Thanks to St. John Ambulance, Bentley’s visits provide more than just companionship. For Freddie, they serve as a welcome distraction from his battle with cancer, which is now in remission.

“I just thought it was awesome because an animal is very non-judgemental,” he said. “They just love you, and you love them, and there’s no in-between.”

Salvation Army officials tell CTV News the Therapy Dog Program brings comfort, companionship and emotional support to residents facing challenges like homelessness, addiction recovery and mental health struggles.

The initiative was introduced by housing manager Marwa Al-Sahar, who recognized the positive impact therapy animals could have on the well-being of residents at the Centre of Hope.

“Many of our residents don’t have family or pets, so Bentley’s visit was truly special,” Al-Sahar explained. “Therapy animals have an incredible ability to ease loneliness and lift spirits, perfectly aligning with our mission of providing holistic care.”

The program began after Al-Sahar connected with a St. John Ambulance volunteer who regularly brings Bentley to various community programs. If enthusiasm from residents grows, the Centre of Hope is considering adding more therapy dogs in the future.

“Bentley’s visits are a simple reminder of the love and hope animals bring,” said Shannon Barnwell, Centre of Hope’s community engagement specialist. “`Our residents light up when Bentley walks in. For those who often feel isolated, these moments remind them that they’re cared for and never alone.”

In 2023, Windsor Police partnered with St. John Ambulance to support the mental health and wellbeing of staff members with the Therapy Dog Program. Salvation Army officials believe through Bentley’s visits, the Centre of Hope can continue to foster a supportive and nurturing environment to ensure that every resident feels valued and understood.
