Amico and Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex (HFHWE) have reaffirmed their commitment to building affordable, high-quality homes in the region through the continuation of their partnership.

While the exact location of their upcoming project will be announced later this year, both organizations say they remain dedicated to making homeownership accessible for more families in Windsor and Essex County.

This, after officials in Leamington announced late last month that the municipality would not proceed with a proposed attainable and affordable housing development involving both organizations at the former Leamington District Secondary School property.

In a release, Amico officials stated the company has a strong track record in community development and affordable housing, noting Amico was previously selected by the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation to construct the Meadowbrook Development, a 10-storey apartment building in East Windsor built to passive house standards, prioritizing energy efficiency and sustainability.

“Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex reflects our shared vision of building strong, inclusive communities,” said Dominic Amicone, CEO of Amico. “Together, we are committed to creating sustainable housing solutions that empower families and contribute to the growth of the Windsor-Essex region.”

According to a recent study by David Coletto of Abacus Data, 71 per cent of Canadians still aspire to homeownership. Habitat for Humanity advocates for maintaining pathways to affordable homeownership, emphasizing its role in fostering community stability. Through its geared-to-income mortgage model, the organization enables hardworking families in need of housing to enter the housing market.

“Homeownership remains a cornerstone of the Canadian dream,” said Fiona Coughlin, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex. “Through our partnership with Amico, we are not just constructing houses; we are building futures, strengthening families, and contributing to the long-term health of our communities. We’re thrilled to continue this important work together.”

Both Amico and HFHWE said they look forward to sharing more details about their upcoming project in the near future.
