‘Shine your light on everyone you see’: B.C. ukulele player takes pictures of hundreds of sunsets

Adam finds out what inspired a woman to stop on her way home from ukulele practice.

VICTORIA, B.C. — Ginny Glover was driving home from a ukulele practice when she couldn’t help but stop to watch the setting sun.

“Look at this! You have to be pointing this way!” Ginny smiles before suggesting the video camera pan away from her to the glowing horizon. “When there’s something that you beautiful, you have to stop.”

And seeing as you’ve stopped, why not take a picture? Like when Ginny lived overseas and took photos of sunsets every day, which culminated in a collection of hundreds of pictures of the sky painted in colours ranging from vibrant pink to bursting yellow.

“It was one of my favourite things to do,” Ginny smiles.

And it still is one of the things in her “tool kit.”

“When you’re having tough time, it’s having thing in your life that you can go to that just really bring you joy,” Ginny says.

The other tool in her kit is the ukulele.

“Because it’s such a happy instrument,” Ginny smiles before agreeing to play a soundtrack to the setting sun.

“How about this one?” Ginny asks after looking through a folder full of sheet music. “‘Try a Little Kindness.’”

It’s a song about lending a hand to those in need and being kind to everyone, even the people with whom we disagree.

“Just shine your light on everyone you see,” Ginny sings the chorus.

And as the setting sun shines its light, Ginny invites everyone to see that no matter what you’re in the middle of doing, no matter how your day unfolded, if you take a moment to stop and appreciate the sunset, your day can always end with a burst of beauty.
