‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’: Coworkers who couldn’t stand each other embark on ‘ferry tale’ love story

Adam meets a couple who fell in love while working together—in a story that can best be described as a “ferry tale" romance.

When Jordyn Sankey and Les Fox first met while working on BC Ferries, it was not smooth sailing.

“I walked up to her and said, ‘You’re Jordyn,’” Fox laughs after imitating his dismissive tone. “And she goes, ‘Who the H-E-double-hockey-sticks are you?’”

“Not one bit did I like this man,” Sankey recalls. “I thought he came off as arrogant.”

“I can be a jerk,” Fox admits. “But I’m a nice guy.”

Although Fox worked in the engine room downstairs, and Sankey supported the customers upstairs, they happened to meet again in the common crew room, when she walked in with her dinner to find only him there.

“I felt like it would be rude to walk out,” Sankey says.

So, she stayed. And their initially awkward conversation turned unexpectedly effortless.

“I found out she’s actually intelligent in ways that I’m not intelligent,” Fox smiles.

“(I realized) he’s not actually mean,” Sankey says. “He’s quite a funny man.”

So, for the rest of the week, they ended up spending all their dinner breaks together.

“I guess we’ve just kind of been inseparable ever since,” Fox smiles.

They started seeing each other away from work, and along with having a lot of fun, they encouraged each other to be better people.

“He’s taught me so much,” Sankey says. “It’s too much to even say.”

Over the past two years together, Fox says he’s learned to be kinder, and lower that tough exterior.

“I can be open and truly loving with Jordyn,” Fox says. “I’ve never really felt like this before.”

So, during a recent road trip, Fox says he made an impromptu proposal.

“I remember being like, ‘Hey! Want to get married?’” Fox says before being interrupted by Sankey.

“That was not his idea,” Sankey laughs. “That was mine!”

No matter who asked who, they both said yes, before Sankey and Fox decided to vow, “I do” where they first met—on board a ferry.

“You may kiss your bride,” the officiant says in a video of their wedding ceremony, before the 70 members of their BC Ferries family in attendance begin cheering.

“It felt right,” Sankey smiles. “It definitely felt right.”

“She takes care of me,” Fox adds. “And I want to take care of her.”

And if this “ferry tale” romance were to have a fairy tale moral, the co-workers turned newlyweds say it’s, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
